Can your computer play a physical 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc?
Do not assume it can because it plays 4K files. CyberLink says format-compliant Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc playback on Windows PC platforms became unavailable in April 2025 after Intel SGX verification ended. Intel separately says 11th-generation and newer processors lack SGX support for protected UHD playback. Disc reading and file playback are different workflows.
A physical Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, an ordinary 1080p Blu-ray Disc, and a 4K video file are three different inputs. Licensed menu-based disc playback, direct disc-data reading, ripping to a media file, and copying to a disc-style structure are also separate tasks. A product must document the exact combination you need.
The operating system's built-in apps are not enough evidence of disc support. Microsoft says Windows Media Player does not include the codecs required for Blu-ray Disc files. Apple says its built-in DVD Player app does not play Blu-ray discs. Those statements describe the built-in apps, not every third-party program on Windows or macOS.
For format-compliant UHD disc playback on a Windows PC, the current official evidence is restrictive: Intel says its 11th-generation and newer processors do not support UHD Blu-ray because SGX is absent, and CyberLink says the SGX verification service ended in April 2025, affecting older SGX-capable platforms as well. UHD disc reading or personal-library workflows use different compatibility checks and must not be presented as licensed disc playback.

CyberLink says format-compliant Ultra HD Blu-ray playback on Windows PC platforms is no longer possible as of April 2025 because Intel SGX verification was discontinued. CyberLink separately says compatible 1080p Blu-ray playback remains available.
Does 4K video playback mean UHD Blu-ray Disc playback?
No. A product can decode a 4K video file without reading or playing a protected physical UHD Blu-ray Disc.
Can an Intel 11th-generation or newer PC play protected UHD Blu-ray?
Intel says UHD Blu-ray is not supported on 11th-generation and newer Intel processor platforms because SGX is not present. Intel says 1080p Blu-ray remains a separate supported format.

Do I need an exact LibreDrive-compatible drive for a MakeMKV UHD workflow?
MakeMKV's developer says a LibreDrive-compatible drive is required to read UHD discs and that compatibility depends on the exact firmware, not only the marketing model name. Verify the current compatibility information before buying hardware.
