MakeMKV and HandBrake solve different stages. MakeMKV can preserve selected Blu-ray video, audio, subtitles, metadata, and chapters in MKV without re-encoding; HandBrake can then encode a readable disc backup or MKV into a smaller, device-oriented MP4. If you already have a readable source, you may only need HandBrake. If preserving the original streams matters more than MP4 or file size, stop at MKV.
A large MakeMKV file is usually not a failed compression job: its stated purpose is to preserve source streams without changing them, and its download page says a typical Blu-ray movie takes about 30 GB. Removing an unwanted audio track can save space, but the source video is often the largest part.
HandBrake is the encoding stage when the goal is a smaller file or a profile matched to a phone, TV, browser, or media server. Its official presets change container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio choices, so there is no single best setting for every destination.
